Application Traffic Monitoring
B*Nator Application Traffic Monitoring allows you to track user traffic for specific BlackBerry applications. Therefore first of all you have to define the Application for which B*Nator should log the traffic.
List of traffic applications
In the list of traffic application there is information about the number of defined address patters, number of users and number of matching addresses with option to edit and delete traffic applications.
In B*Nator menu Administration/Configuration/Traffic Applications create a new Application, by typing in the name, for instance "BlackBerry". After that define the URL patterns for which the traffic should be listed for this application, for instance *.blackberry.com:*. The patterns always consist of information about the hostname and the port.
Create and define a new traffic application in B*Nator
The pattern *.blackberry.com:* describes traffic to all sub domains of this domain. This traffic is added to the application traffic monitoring chart for the application you have named BlackBerry. We recommend adding the pattern in the first step like this. After the B*Nator had some time to collect information about application traffic you will find a list of addresses matching to this pattern. The second step should be to carefully review the list of matching addresses and decide to which traffic application which pattern should match. It might be useful to define a new traffic application:
- BlackBerry Internet Service: bis.*.blackberry.com:*
- BlackBerry Appworld: appworld.blackberry.com:*
After defining all patterns including the string blackberry.com for application, this pattern should be deleted. It is important to precisely define the patterns you assign to an application and make sure that the pattern definition is unique. Otherwise B*Nator is not able to clearly indicate to which application the traffic belongs.
NOTE:
All traffic measured for an application will be displayed in B*Nator as OTW (over the wire traffic), which means, the traffic amount is displayed as if it has not been comprised, although is has been comprised for OTA (over the air) traffic. So please keep this in mind when analyzing application traffic amount for a user.
Application Traffic for all BES users
In the B*Nator menu BES User\Filter\Traffic application the names of the traffic applications are listed with the user count and a link to the list of users for this traffic application
Predefined list of monitored traffic applications with number of users and link to user list:
In the B*Nator menu BES users there is a new option to create customized user lists including application traffic information. For instance in the list of all users use the “Select columns”-button to create your own user list. Select the column header “Traffic form/to device” and an additional option to select the traffic application as well as the time frame is available to specify the application traffic information. The name of the traffic application as well as the time frame can be selected from a drop down menu with available information.
Customized user list
In a customized userlist you can include information about application traffic from and to the device with an additional option to select the traffic application from a drop down menu and with an option to select the time frame.
Application Traffic Report
The total amount of application traffic is also available in a report, which can be generated from the B*Nator menu Reports\Traffic applications for a selectable month or as a total report including application traffic information about all BlackBerry users.
Application Traffic for individual BES user
On the user detail page there is a new tab available with information about application traffic. The application is listed with information about the amount of traffic from and to the device for the current month as well as in total. The timeframe "total" describes the time beginning with the definition of the pattern matching to the traffic application in B*Nator up to the current date.
Application Traffic for individual user on user detail page
From the Application traffic information on the user detail page there are two more options to view the traffic application data for this user in detail: option to “View MDS traffic detailed by address” and the chart-icon that gives an overview of the application traffic usage in the last day or month. The chart is only filled with data, if there has been data detected for this application and user.

The button to “view MDS traffic detailed by address” shows information about the addresses matching the application traffic for this BlackBerry user:

Your Benefit:
- Information about historical data per traffic application and user.
- Information about historical data per traffic application in total.
- Reports about application traffic data per month and per year.
- Detailed information about all addresses matching to a traffic application pattern
